Ratings are imperfect censorship tools that evolve over time.
PG-13 was created specifically for Indiana Jones Temple of Doom because there was no rating between PG and R.
Content that fits in these boxes is not the same from year to year. Not just with regards to violence or language, but casual topless women that were commonplace in the 70s is no longer PG/PG-13 acceptable.
- rated-pg-for-hn 7y agoPG-13 is the worst rating imaginable now, because it contains some highly anticipated titles, overhyped to capture the tween audience begging mom and dad to take them to the movies, yet PG-13 movies are so watered down, and always balance for feel-good morality and happy endings, as to be predictable to the point of being an unwatchable waste of time. R ratings by now are watered down by a different principle, profitability in international markets (angling toward simplistic dialog for lowest common denominator translations), combined with a pool over careerist lapdog actors and directors that lack the spine to stand up for a good story arc, which in turn is reflected by the spinelessness of risk averse producers and investors leery of defying focus group and test market expectations. By now, most movies get completely mutilated by test screening analysis, in which careful attention is paid to not violate the norms and sensibilities of the most prudent an cautious viewer in the name of a lowly, irrelevant good story.
