Why can't we have a "Spotify for newspapers"?
- manigandham 7y agoBecause nobody pays for news and publishers don't cooperate. This has been tried 100s of times. See this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19038820 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19038820
- fouc 7y agoI think the patreon model works well for content producers.
- manigandham 7y agoNews isn't valued the same and donations isn't a good business model for a publisher that has full-time employees. Very few content producers make anywhere near a full-time salary and many have to do extra things like merchandise to augment income.
- HenryBemis 7y agoIsn't "Apple news" something like that? I remember Apple also had a NewsStand (which I never used). Do you mean a monthly paid service (e.g. $10) that would provide infinite or finite number of articles (e.g. 200 articles for $10, or 1000 articles for $20)? I see a problem in that area. How would a company get paid? The <insert title of serious newspaper> will want to price their articles more thatn the <insert title of trashy gossip newspaper>. It would be a mess to figure this out. And who will be hosting all these articles? This is an interesting point to discuss/develop.
