I've started asking for non-tangible gifts recently. Things like piano lessons, sailing lessons, rock climbing gym membership, Flickr Pro subscription, etc.

  That's a great idea. Gifts such as those will give you experiences and the basis for more experiences over a lifetime. Physical gifts can sometimes do that, but not as often.
