One thing I haven't seen mentioned here yet: symbolic planning is still a pretty large area. It's not really visible if you look at what people are starting AI startups around, but there are a bunch of large companies that use symbolic planning systems, and it's also an active research area, even if not the most in-vogue one at the moment. I have no inside information on why they're interested, but it's also intriguing that DARPA continues to pour money into planning system R&D.
