Free in this context means "free as in speech, not as in beer."
- hopler 7y agoFree speech implies you can't force it to be not free as in beer. Being allowed to charge money for something doesn't prevent other people for giving it away free.
- rlayton2 7y agoTrue, but there are a large number of people for whom just running "make" at the command line is too much of a hassle. This is normally the market, not other technical people.
- wmf 7y agoThis really doesn't work and it's a disservice to mention it. Every time someone has tried to withhold binaries other people step up within hours to provide them (whether that's a good thing or not).
- rlayton2 7y agoThats not what I meant. I was more considering "help those people" than "take advantage of them and lock them in"
- charliebrownau 7y agoWhat Country has free speech anymore ? Not Australia Not Canada Not UK Not NZ Definally not at ANY western univierties campus Definally not on any WOKE LEFT WING platforms online Heck people in AU+NZ are getting arrested for "offended" speech Yet Ive never seen real solutions from RS , EFF or others in the free software community's to address this The EFF and RS seem to be about their own socialist dream world that people code for free , world is anti capitalistic and they offer no viable way for companies to make money from software
- AndrewKemendo 7y agoI'm aware of what this version of free means. However you can't separate the two in a free (as in speech) market.
