I was required to learn cursive as a child in school, since at the time, you couldn't expect everyone to have a computer available. They even enforced the use of cursive for writing assignments all the way up through middle school. To be honest, for just writing stuff down with a pen, I still use it. I just don't see any point in switching to block print, since anything that needs to be "properly" block-printed, I'll end up typing.
