At the individual level I'd like to think that there are many people who care about future generations and find motivation to work towards their benefit. I don't expect me or my generation or my children's generation to live on Mars, but I still see space exploration as a multi-generation effort to benefit and possibly preserve future people. Not that I'm thinking about all that while struggling with a race condition.
