Is it a hostage situation? ie, If I dont get the funding, Im gonna delete all this.
- jonchang 8y agoOccasionally, it's nice to compensate people for producing something that others value. This has a couple of benefits, one of which is that same person might continue to produce interesting things.
- p1necone 8y agoI have no problem with paying people for their work, I just don't believe kickstarter is the appropriate platform for selling already completed software. (And neither does kickstarter, unless they've changed their goals recently).
- NikkiA 8y agoPatreon would be more appropriate as an after-the-fact compensation.
- rebuilder 8y agoThe kickstarter appears to be for selling access.
- p1necone 8y agoThe tool wasn't even created by the author - it's just windirstat (https://windirstat.net/ https://windirstat.net/). This is cool and all, but unless I'm missing something I don't think there would have been that much work that had to be done to make this happen. I don't really think this is the kind of thing kickstarter should be used for, at the very least it should be reframed to say: "with the money made from this kickstarter, I will work on these future projects, as well as releasing this thing I've already done." This is effectively just selling an already finished product, but abusing the mindshare that kickstarter has even though it's not really intended for this case. Also... if the data is available freely already in a machine readable format somewhere (is it?), the script to transcribe that to the filesystem would probably only be a weekend project for a reasonable dev.
- dmitriid 8y agoAuthor: Getting 2 billion files for 45 years worth of data from multiple sources, figuring how to present them and visualise them (including negative values etc. ) HN: why should the author be compensated, since everything is free and I can do it on weekend.
- maimeowmeow 8y agoKinda like how you wondered what the government does with tax money, Im just wondering how each kickstarter dollar is allocated. Its odd you feel attacked when accountability is asked of you.
- p1necone 8y agoAgain: Not complaining the author is asking to get paid for their work; mostly just bothered about kickstarter being used to sell a finished product.
- emmelaich 8y agoProducts are never finished; they mentioned a few issues.
