This is dumb. This would give potential employers too much leverage in salary negotiations.
- fxj 7y agoWhy does it work in Norway? It is among the list of the highest GDP per capita in the world. Norway rank 6, US rank 10. (IMF)
- rimliu 7y agoMy guess: very small income gap.
- winterismute 7y agoBut how was that very small gap created? Maybe such kind of policies played a role?
- bingerman 7y agoDecent managing of oil resources defnitely played a role there. Also, Norway is a small and still pretty homogenous country. They probably feel at least in some level that they are in the same boat together, something that is hard to achieve when you just (almost) randomly mix millions of people from all over the world like in the U.S.
- fxj 7y agoGini Coefficient for Norway and the US: US: 18.5 Norway: 6.5 The ratio of the average income of the richest 10% to the poorest 10%
- bnegreve 7y agoMaybe it's this, but there is also a fair amount of oil in Norway. From wikipedia [1]: The petroleum industry accounts for around a quarter of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).On a per-capita basis, Norway is the world's largest producer of oil and natural gas outside of the Middle East. - fxj 7y agoYour argument does not apply that this would give potential employers too much leverage in salary negotiations or can you explain?
- bnegreve 7y agoAh, I though you were suggesting that the GDP per capita in Norway was high because of tax transparency. Now I realize that you were probably just saying that Norway and US are comparable in terms of GDP per capita. Am I correct?
- CathedralBorrow 7y agoYou can replace Norway with Iceland if you'd like. No oil there.
- jlawson 7y agoIt would probably work among just Norwegian Americans too. Many things will work in a tiny, ethnically homogenous, oil-rich, high IQ, high conscientiousness country that will crash and burn when applied to the broader world. Don't commit the fallacy of thinking outcomes rise directly from policy like a math equation, as though people are interchangeable widgets. People have characteristics. Ref: seeing like a state
- ikeyany 7y agoYeah everyone knows Norwegians are ethnically superior to others. Wait, that is what you're getting at, yes?
- jlawson 7y agoNo, I'm stating measurable facts about the world that help us predict outcomes and make important decisions. "Ethnically superior" is a vague, probably-racist concept and you should think long and hard about why your mind switches to that mode so quickly.
- lobotryas 7y agoIt “switches to that mode” because he’s trying to discredit you even though you are correct. Norway’s unique situation and culture doesn’t mean their policies can be copied whole-sale.
- ikeyany 7y agoI too love making dog-whistle comments, and then accusing people of racism who call me out on it.
- kristofferR 7y agoIn Norway the names of those who checked your taxes is logged and displayed to you, so bosses checking their employees' taxes wouldn't be the wisest move - it would look really weird. You can of course get semi-anonymity by paying someone else to perform the search for you, but it's not really done much. Companies are generally nicer in Norway anyway, likely due to our lack of minimum wage, CLAs and tripartite cooperation model.
- akimball 7y agoIt doesn't work for those who are extorted, kidnapped, robbed, killed.
- nadocrew 7y agoCandidates would also have more information. They would have information about current employees and they could compare against their coworkers after they join.
- sp332 7y agoThis would make it a much shorter step to collective bargaining, which would increase the power the employees have in negotiations.
- rubyfan 7y agoI agree. More states are implementing laws so prospective employers cannot ask or base a salary offer on prior wages. This should positively effect gender and racial inequality at least during hiring. This would render all that protection moot.
- mikeash 7y agoEmployers already have way too much leverage. This would give employers a bit more info, and employees a lot more info, which should level the playing field considerably.
- commandlinefan 7y agoEmployees too, though - you’d know how much they were paying people in the same role.
