Is it time to decentralise Wikipedia...?
- throwawaa743892 8y agoDecentralize means a lot and has a lot of impact. It's not as easy as "installing the blockchain". Instead, it might be more fruitful to take regular archives of it. Indeed, that is a supported action (wikipedia is intently copyleft) and many people already do it.
- el_dev_hell 8y agoDecentralization has been thrown around as a buzzword for the past year. I can see a strong case for decentralizing Wikipedia. Or a comparable offering.
- throwawaa743892 8y agoPeople say it to seem smart. And then you start asking questions and they look foolish indeed. For example, decentralize how? At what level? Article? Storage? Editorial? Might as well say all you need to build a car is 4 wheels and some power.
- gruez 8y agoYou don't need do decentralize it. You only need to make it easy to mirror content in case it's taken down. Wikipedia has a lot to lose by not complying (site getting blocked, donations cut off, etc.), but unaffiliated third parties don't. Get them to host censored content. Russian users can host German censored content, and German users can host Russian censored content. Combine this with a notice on every page that has content removed so people know when to look for it.
- hndamien 8y agoSome like this, with some sort of diff checker, then take the diffs and commit them to decentralised storage + IPFS so they then have no territory.
