Yeah. Machine vision is hard. Really hard.
- toasterlovin 8y agoIt's that, but it's also that "driving" is a problem with a really large surface area. There are so many edge cases that it's insane. And every single major metro area basically has subtly different rules and baseline assumptions about how people will drive.
- tannerc 8y agoMost major players in the space are not relying solely on machine vision, but rather a combination of lidar, radar, mapping, etc. Vision is just one small piece of the puzzle, and while it's extremely difficult—particularly when considering the complexities of navigating a busy city street—the other parts are just as challenging. This is where claims like that of Ford's CEO really stem from. Looking at the problem and some of the existing approaches to solving it, it's become apparent the way forward is not at all clear. Realistically companies are making progress, but as an industry we may not have a straight path toward a feasible solution for some time.
