Sounds a bit like 'murder, arson and jaywalking'. Being 'hateful' is not the same as killing people on a stream.
- mcv 8y agoIf 'hate' means 'wanting people dead or gone', then it could be a step on the same path. Maybe it's a cultural thing, but from a Christian perspective, they're not so different.
- AllegedAlec 8y agoSure, but if we're going to redefine words to just mean anything, a discussion will get nowhere. Hate just means a strong dislike of something. Someone can be hateful of a presidential candidate without wanting them dead or gone. Is that hateful speech, or is this acceptable? Furthermore, do we really trust governments to decide what is?* *: note that I'm not saying that I do trust FAANGs to make this decision either.
- mcv 8y agoBut is hate just a strong dislike? The notion that it means you wish them dead or gone seems to be at least 2000 years old. Not to mention that in recent memory, genocide tends to be preceded by hate speech. And there's rather a big difference between disagreeing with a particular politician's policies and claiming that a particular demographic group is the reason for whatever ails society.
