Copyright holders were compensated via the purchase of physical media, and only the owner of a particular disk had access, but they have been sued by powerful media conglomerates. Disclaimer: I invented the system they used and carefully crafted what I thought was a system compliant with copyright law, but as always the party with more money wins in court.
