Should public workers be in debt for the rest of their life or should they be uneducated?
- exabrial 8y agoNeither? That's a false dichotomy.
- sosodev 8y agoRight, the correct answer is neither. So who's going to foot the bill for their education? They're already working for the public benefit so...
- justtopost 8y agoThey take home a paycheck, they get to pay their debts like anyone else.
- stickfigure 8y agoThis acts as an "employment benefit" for the government, like health insurance, paid vacation, and free lunch. Whether or not it's better than just paying people more is debatable - but you can say the same things about health insurance, paid vacation, and free lunch. It's a little more complicated than employer-sponsored lunch because it applies to a variety of employers, not just the US government. And it targets a particular demographic (recent college graduates). But fundamentally it's (supposed to be) one more thing that humans factor into the decision of what sort of career to take. There are reasonable arguments for and against the program, but soundbites like "they get to pay their debts like anyone else" do not really add to the conversation constructively.
- dublidu 8y agoProvide cheap and good public edu I’m is the solution in every other developed country. Stop encouraging schools to increase tuition.
- dnautics 8y agoMaybe we should make educational debt dischargeable through bankruptcy.
- poilcn 8y agoCurrent "official" proposal is to make colleges pay share of the debt burden in case of the student's default to bind them with the risks.
- dnautics 8y ago...I can't even. Why not take a Byzantinely complex situation with a major flaw even more complex, instead of using a socially acceptable, simple solution that revolutionized human society for the better? I guess politicians have to put "plans" to their name, cant use something NIH
- anticensor 8y agoThey would make all student loan debts inheritable in exchange for that.
- frogperson 8y agoThat is a truly scary thought. Can you please delete this so they don't get any ideas?
- poilcn 8y agoDo they even need this sort of education? Considering "higher education" is a form of signaling and a discrimination mechanism for enterprises, not a valid way to get educated, the public sector should not be the one to take the lead in it.
- hjk05 8y agoOr should they be paid a sallery that matches the market cost so they can just pay of their debt themselves like private workers?
- exabrial 8y agoOr quit the low paying job and work in the private industry
