I've never really seen a code base that is hard to work with due to "language feature abuse" (excepting inheritance). "Don't use this language feature" or your code will be hard to read is sort of the bogeyman of the programming world. Code is hard to work with because of too much coupling, or bad architecture, or no tests, or bad abstractions.
