Maybe I'm jaded, but I only share photos of my life via text or even sd card. No one needs to see my life, besides it's kinda boring. Even if my boring life means I shouldn't be worried about it being exposed, I dont want that out there. I dont know maybe I'm just weird hahah.
- tomc1985 8y agoAmateur photographer here, Instagram is invaluable. Post only what you want the world to see, and so on...
- aphextron 8y agoAre you an amateur photographer? Or are you someone who posts images to a social media website for a dopamine hit? Perhaps there’s a value to gatekeeping. It can make us actually put effort and consideration into things. Modern web services like Instagram have allowed human fantasies to run wild, completely detached from reality. If you truly cared about your art and wanted it to be seen, you would devote yourself to that and work on getting into a gallery, or set up your own website. Instead you retreat to a fantasy world of online likes where you feel legitimized as an artist with zero real effort, and zero care or true appreciation on the audience’s part.
- wybiral 8y ago...Or they just use Instagram as a platform to promote their work. If your content gets shared it's basically advertising but you're assuming that they don't do business other than just posting on Instagram.
- thinkling 8y agoInstagram is used very commonly in the art world and all of the full-time artists I know are on it and use it to promote their work, photography or otherwise. Different people use platforms in different ways.
- another-dave 8y agoWhy would an amateur photographer feel that they have to work towards getting their work in a gallery? Does an amateur baker have to have a stall at the farmers' market, an amateur knitter have to have an Etsy store? Nothing wrong with just taking photos for the love of it (literally the definition of amateur) and sharing them with your friends because you think they'll appreciate them. Not every hobby has to be taken up with so much effort it's like a second job.
- eertami 8y ago>If you truly cared about your art and wanted it to be seen, you would devote yourself to that and work on getting into a gallery You've not understood what the word amateur means, at all. It's like suggesting an amateur tennis player doesn't care if he isn't trying to play Wimbledon. Or an amateur runner doesn't care if he isn't top 5% of marathon. Do you not have hobbies or something?
- tomc1985 8y agoIndeed, I specifically avoid "professional" engagements because I have no interest in being published in a gallery, or in dealing with the art world or with clients. I've been thinking about setting up a stall at the local farmers market with some artist friends but that is about it. Sadly, parent's attitude is quite common among some.
- wybiral 8y agoI don't think there's anything weird about that at all. But suppose you did want to publish your content. For instance I make videos about tech and programming that I enjoy sharing with others and getting feedback on, so I post them on YouTube. Some people like to do that with their selfies or political commentary. To me that's all fine as long as they understand that it's no longer private. The bigger privacy violations, imo, are the hidden ones. The web trackers, IoT data collection, location services, conversation metadata, etc. These are situations where it's not "public" like YouTube or Twitter, but it sure isn't private either.
