Libgen hosts academic works, sure, but it also hosts literature, including popular literature like everyone’s favourite science-fiction and fantasy series, children’s books, etc. So, the "access to knowledge should be open and free; the public might have paid for it anyway" isn’t a suitable defense of it here. As a big fan of Libgen who has scanned and uploaded many books myself, I would rather take an overall position against copyright in general, regardless of whether the text matches what people think of as "knowledge" or not.
- Funes- 8y agoI was strictly referring to research papers and other academic publications; maybe I should have said "access to academic works" instead. Other than that, I could do away with Libgen's copyrighted literature, since I've never downloaded any of it. Also, I personally wouldn't be so fast to take a position against copyright in general, to be honest, but that discussion will have to take place somewhere else.
