As with everything, take "almost no cost" with a grain of salt. There sure is situations where docker can be slow compared to bare metal, even on linux.

As with everything, take "almost no cost" with a grain of salt. There sure is situations where docker can be slow compared to bare metal, even on linux.
- sams99 8y agoabsolutely if you have a filesystem heavy operation and are accessing files inside the container in aufs instead of a local mount, you are going to pay a massive docker tax.
- jen20 8y agoIf you are running on a Linux host on bare metal, Docker containers ARE bare metal - they use kernel primitives such as cgroups and namespaces, not hardware virtualisation.
- NightlyDev 8y agoYou don't have to use virtualization for something to be slow. Most things are running basically the same when using containers, but not everything. Take networking as an example: That's usually not working as it would on bare metal and usually result in a significant performance loss.
