It's kind of important to note that "Reddit Bureau of Investigation" is just one sub-reddit on reddit, not an actual custom thing endorsed by reddit and the next time a disaster happens /r/LearnsNothingFromThePast will be sure to pin the next crime on whichever brown person they can find first.
In fact, the more you find out about this sub-reddit the more it sounds like Wired is making an erroneous link between the actual problem of vigilante-ism on reddit and some harmless Lost & Found style sub-reddit. If you actually want to follow the thread of reddit's amateur sleuths it doesn't go via /r/RDI it goes via /r/conspiracy. Having spent the entirity of 2016 claiming that Hilary Clinton was party to a secret pedofile ring in a pizza restaurant culminating in a vigilante shooting up the restaurant, they've now moved on. Joe Biden is pedofile this time! They've got video of him making physical contact with children in public spaces in front of cameras to prove it and they're going to run with this one till they've got their man!
I just feel this story is a little ridiculous.
- jessaustin 8y agoJust so long as old Joe weren't colludin' with no foreigners!
- m0zg 8y ago> Joe Biden is pedophile this time! There seems to be a coordinated push against Biden, driven hard through the entirety of mainstream press at the moment. People who have been quiet for decades are coming out of the woodwork to #metoo the guy. I guess whoever owns the DNC really doesn't want him to run. By the looks and sheer force of the hit job, it seems that HRC (or someone of equal political weight) might run again.
- jayd16 8y agoWhat kind of tin foil hat is this? Isn't it simply more likely that any number of announced opponents, Republican, Democratic or independent would dig up dirt (real or otherwise)?
- nothal 8y agoI've been noticing more and more of what are essentially crack-pot conspiracy theories on HN recently.

- m0zg 8y agoDo you not read the news? Is it not weird to you that everything appears simultaneously everywhere all of a sudden, immediately after the guy mentioned that he _might_ run? It's like with Trump: before he ran, he was a beloved American icon (no joke, just take a look at what the magazines said of him like 5 years ago), immediately after he entered the race _all_ of the "free" press does a 180, and he's literally Hitler all of a sudden. Why would that be, I wonder. Could it be because basically all of US "free" press is owned by like 5 people who coordinate the narratives and work with powers that be? Is that a tinfoil hat or does this sound plausible to you?
- jayd16 8y agoOpposition research is real and frankly in the realm of boring. An illuminati-esk shadow campaign is far more conspiratorial.
- fineIllregister 8y agoTrump was near universally hated by those who were most familiar with him in NY and NJ. He was (and still is) considered a blowhard who discriminated against and displaced people of color in his real estate projects; ran tacky, shady, constantly failing business operations; and refused to honor his agreements, stiffing contractors and business partners and bullying people with his unearned wealth. His national reputation was mostly based on The Apprentice and his PR efforts. It's not a surprise that people changed their opinion of him when he announced he was running, because in his announcement he accused Mexico of actively sending criminals to the US, and his solution was a humanitarian, ecological, and financial disaster of a wall. This of course would not even address the majority of policy violations in immigration (over staying visas). His ridiculous promise that Mexico would pay for it was also an obvious farce. It was a wake up call to people who had previously not scrutinized him very much, particularly in a political context. What's "weird" is that anyone took him seriously after that.
- nothal 8y agoClinton has said that she won't be running for president. Would be interesting if someone picked her as a VP but honestly seems like a political third rail, at least in this cycle. I think running for president puts you in a different news spectrum; everyone's going to be gunning for you if they can because it'll rocket a journalist's career if they take down a candidate. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/04/us/politics/hillary-clinton-not-running.html https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/04/us/politics/hillary-clint...
- cheesymuffin 8y agoExactly, glad someone said it. I don't understand what the motivation is behind all of it, but I can only assume it's white and male supremacy at the heart. Anything to chant, "but Hillary" and secure a presidency for a man who's ADMITTED to sexually assaulting women and regularly denigrated developing countries.
