Honestly both of these are pretty easy claims to check. Not by manually looking and choosing recommended videos, but by following a random walk. If it is true that it all drags you into extreme videos, then if you take a random walk from any video, choosing recommendations at random, you would always end up down the hole in extreme videos. In a lot of these experiments though, people explicitly pick the more extreme of the recommendations repeatedly, which of course will lead you down the rabbit hole.
