Sounds like a production issue to me, and they're taking an opportunity to throw shade on the existing induction-charge market in anticipation of fixing issues and launching something bigger later.
"Doesn't meet our standards" sounds like "we have something vastly superior to Qi charging but it isn't quite ready yet" which will get eaten up by Apple stans.
