F-35 can vertically takeoff, can support carriers and has smaller and stealthier radar signature than cheaper planes.
Fighter airplanes have many roles, dogfight being one of them.
US also has cheaper F-14s, F-15s and F-16s to match.
- SteveCoast 8y agoThe F-14 was retired a long time ago and the other two are aging out right now.
- seppin 8y agoA large order of F-15(x) was just made.

- chrisseaton 8y ago> can support carriers If the planes are there to support the carrier then why is the carrier there? You’ve got the whole concept backwards - the carrier is there to support the planes.
- kickopotomus 8y agoIf you are getting attacked, the planes are there to support the carrier. Carriers aren't meant to really "support" anyone in a combat role.
- chrisseaton 8y ago> the planes are there to support the carrier But why do you think the carrier is there in the first place? It's to support the planes. The planes are the whole point. If they could do without a carrier and just have the planes they would.
- kickopotomus 8y agoI think the issue here is we are interpreting "support" differently. I believe the meaning that spectramax was going for was combat support. Carriers support planes logistically by giving them a place to take off, land, and resupply.
- spectramax 8y agoYea I think I have it backwards. Carriers are primarily there to support the fighter jets and serve as a "mobile airport".
