Since the article doesn't really go in detail as to why Amtrak is losing money, most of Amtrak's losses are from long routes across the US, not short distance travel. That being said, Amtrak is definitely an interesting way to travel, and the route between Denver and California on the California Zephyr is really awesome if one likes landscapes.
