There are plenty of alternatives to W3W, most notably Open Location Codes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Location_Code https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Location_Code
Alternatively, try a W3W parody:

- rakoo 8y agoOut of interest here's a list of alternatives and why they're worse than plus codes: https://github.com/google/open-location-code/wiki/Evaluation-of-Location-Encoding-Systems https://github.com/google/open-location-code/wiki/Evaluation...
- slavik81 8y agoMGRS and UTM are missing from these comparisons. They're commonly used systems in North America and exist for easier human reasoning and communication about coordinates, so they'd be good to include.
- ajuc 8y agoThe emojis one have the nice property that close addresses share some words.
- kps 8y agoAs usual, the parody is strictly superior to the original.
- DoreenMichele 8y agoThe secret to Weird Al's success.
- aembleton 8y agoAnd the emoji one will work across languages.

- DoreenMichele 8y agoHas anyone else tried to look up a location, find the emoji(s) for it and then put the text for it back into the search bar? It seems to not do reverse lookup, making it completely useless as far as I can tell. You can find the emoji(s) for a place, but not a place that corresponds to the emojis.
- bradknowles 8y agoMaybe that's a feature? ;)
- DoreenMichele 8y agoI did think about posting my location for all the world to see, knowing that it wouldn't tell anyone anything at all. But then I thought "Maybe I just can't figure it out and other people can." Thus the question. :P
- saikofish 8y agoIt definitely isn't a feature! We just never got around to putting it in! I do take pull requests :D
- DoreenMichele 8y agoI was going to try to submit a pull request, but it seems someone requested this already: https://github.com/BadIdeaFactory/what3emojis/issues/10 https://github.com/BadIdeaFactory/what3emojis/issues/10 Reversable #10 @asteres asteres opened this issue almost 2 years ago I don't see a way to lookup an address if I have 3 emoji.
- pbalau 8y agoSo does the other one.
- kyrra 8y agothe pretty landing-page version of Open Location Codes (marketed as Plus Codes): https://plus.codes/ https://plus.codes/
- imglorp 8y agoI just noticed these on Google maps for a business location. Is Plus Codes a Google project or just a partnership?

- jimnotgym 8y agoI know a few hams will be thinking of the Maidenhead Locator or IARU grid squares https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maidenhead_Locator_System https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maidenhead_Locator_System
- mv4 8y agoThat "ship to" emoji address photo is hilarious.
- duiker101 8y agowhat3emojis seems a better idea in the way that at least you are not bound by language. You can describe and remember the emojis as you want. As long as you can convey them precisely.
- saikofish 8y agoAnd when has anyone ever had trouble with that? ;-)
- madeofpalk 8y agoI looked up my old apartment on what3fucks - "dickhead pollock cheeky gayass" - which is surprisingly fitting
- SmellyGeekBoy 8y agoI'd really love to hear the explanation for the "pollock" part ;)
