- sschueller 8y agoRight, but why didn't they just lift the aircraft higher off the ground to fit the larger engines.
- Maxion 8y agoBecause they couldn't fit larger landing gear.
- salawat 8y agoBecause the gear has to be stowed! The gear is retracted inboard, so lengthening was a non starter given the rapidly escalating hardware changes that would be required to the gear bays. Once you start changing the fundamental structure of the air raft, you also start weakening your case for a common type certificate as well.
