A mall is just one subset of the shops in a town. It's somewhat secluded from the open streets. That's a far cry from trying to reserve an entire viral/exponential mechanism for your own political side. That's more akin to only one political party getting to use Television and Radio, then claiming things are "fair" and Free Speech is upheld because the other side can still distribute leaflets. This is exactly what SV oligarch class is seeking to do. They are seeking to reserve all the power of virality and discovery by search in synergy with monetization -- all for their own political side.
That's like telling the part of the population you don't like they don't need cars and mass transit, they can still just walk. They want to rig the media landscape, such that their side has 1000 times the online voice as the other, then declare they've "won" because they can't hear the others. All the while, huge numbers of people find their comments and reviews are erased, while the content creators they want to hear from are de-platformed, kicked off sites, and demonetized.
No, that's not winning in the marketplace of ideas. That's just forcing people with economic power. It's as disingenuous as anything ever propagandized in history.

As is Facebook a subset of social networks on the Internet. > That's like telling the part of the population you don't like they don't need cars and mass transit, they can still just walk. We do that. License suspensions are a thing. > No, that's not winning in the marketplace of ideas. Sure it is. The idea that "Nazis are harmful" has won a bit of a battle here. May it continue to.
- stcredzero 8y agoWe do that. License suspensions are a thing. For political reasons? So, Dave Rubin, for having a viewpoint that puts him at odds with some of the rest of the gay community, so he needs to have his driver's license revoked? That sort of thing would be the action of an authoritarian regime. Sure it is. The idea that "Nazis are harmful" has won a bit of a battle here. May it continue to. "Nazis are harmful," doesn't need censorship to win. It has already won. The more people like that speak, the more most normal people don't like them. Actually, suppressing those who'd disagree with "Nazis are harmful" does more for the that side than anything they say. This goes double for targeting people who aren't X, but using the accusation to silence them. This sort of atrocity ruins the credibility of the correct side. Censorship justified by "X are harmful," invites abuse through exploiting using the accusation to silence people. It is doing this even now. What's more, the sociopathic element that would hijack activism for machiavellian political gain is precisely the element that would do this. By opening the floodgates of censorship and eroding Free Speech, the SV establishment has done exactly this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz0oxIZ3xIg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz0oxIZ3xIg
