Nobody's stopping these "large numbers of people" from swapping URLs.
They may get stopped from having their message show up in the "recommended videos" column on YouTube, and that's fine. Nobody has a right to be in that column.
(When the man said "The revolution will not be televised?" This is what he was talking about. ;) )

In 2019, you might as well restrict those guilty of wrongthink to standing on soapboxes and distributing pamphlets. Everyone you don't like will be restricted to the technology of 20 years ago. (When the man said "The revolution will not be televised?" This is what he was talking about. ;) ) Basically, in 2019, if you don't have virality+monetization, you don't have the franchise.
- Pharmakon 8y agoIn 2019, you might as well restrict those guilty of wrongthink to standing on soapboxes and distributing pamphlets. Putting aside the hysterical Orwellian reference, the world would be a better place if everyone from ISIS to Nazis had to go back to shouting on street corners. This implicit argument you keep making about parity of amplification being equival not to free speech is ludicrous. Given how often people in this thread alone have confronted you on the issues with it, and the cagey nature of your responses it’s increasingly difficult to assume you make this argument in good faith. You can believe that people are owed a Youtube channel and a Facebook page, but at least recognize that no law or principle in law supports that belief.
- stcredzero 8y agoPutting aside the hysterical Orwellian reference, the world would be a better place if everyone from ISIS to Nazis had to go back to shouting on street corners. That sounds nice on the surface. Here's the thing: if Free Speech isn't protected absolutely, especially paying attention to amplifying effects of technology, then those in power will start labeling those they don't like something terrible, like "Islamic Extremists." This is happening right this minute. This happened to Maajid Nawaz, with basically the whole of the Internet taking the SPLC's word for it. (Later they had to retract and settled out of court.) This also happened, and is happening with Tim Pool as a "holocaust denier." He also got a retraction from the SPLC. Tim Pool is regularly called "Alt Right" even though he's a politically left half Korean kid from the South Side of Chicago. This sort of power is being abused all over the place, and it's largely invisible, because a false reality is constructed by Citogenesis ( https://xkcd.com/978/ https://xkcd.com/978/ ) and these scary labels keep most people from checking any further. There are small lies all over the place. A few of them have become big lies. There have been HUGE lies basically holding entire nations in thrall. There are ridiculous lies, such as many of the claims that various non-white people are "white supremacists." You know that information bubbles exist. What you are advocating for, are particular information bubbles which become unassailable, via the power of the SV elites. Because the tools for effectively disseminating the corrective information are neutralized, and those outside the bubble will be reduced to methods orders of magnitude less, with no mass virality (outside a limited box) and no easy monetization. What the SV elites want, is to dominate what comprises the virtual centers of media, culture, and the economy, with the ability to cast out whomever they don't like -- then to be able to call that "fair" and declare they "won" while they are actually using their technological power to manipulate public thought via sole control of the most powerful forms of speech. They want to preferentially maintain the information bubble they happen to like, ruling public thought via control of the most powerful forms of speech "for the greater good."
