Blame the white nationalists for deliberately trying to turn everything into a dogwhistle, with stuff like "Operation O-KKK" where they flooded social media with fake outrage at nonexistent people saying that (HN doesn't support emoji, ok symbol should go here) is racist, thereby turning the it into a racist symbol through the medium of trolling. Nazis around the world now use it to identify themselves while calling it """ironic""" to anyone who asks. Turning benign stuff racist is how modern racists thrive and spread their ideas, and pretending they don't exist doesn't help.
