I hate open offices, and took it as a given that most others do too. But in my last office, they held a poll (anonymous, but kinda in-person, we all voted electronically while in an all-hands meeting) in an office that is mostly (but not solely engineers)...and it came back slightly IN FAVOR of open offices. I was stunned, but asking around there were enough people that didn't seem to have a problem with the distractions to explain it, so I think it was actually representative.
