I suspect that it may derive from theatrical "Angels" ie those who back shows on Broadway. I do remember whilst cramming for exams in the UK listening to the only radio program still on some guy talking about how he was going to do a show based on Ts Elliots Practical cats, I though interesting that wont work :-)
