Yeah, there's definitely less 'leeway'/sympathy given to those whose disabilities are invisible/mostly invisible. Honestly, I'd say it's probably an uncanny valley effect of sorts (as depressing as that sounds) where those who look 'normal' but don't act it put people on edge and arouse suspicion.
