Even then it took decades for it to shake off all of the geopolitical interference from would-be overlords including Japan and various European powers. Meanwhile minorities in the US are systematically denied any opportunity to escape their situation. Everything is rigged against them. It's hard to pull yourself up with your own bootstraps when there's a boot crushing down on your neck and a hand in both pockets to steal whatever you might scrape together.
