Maybe this applies to kernel development, but for web development with OOP languages like JavaScript and PHP, I find a debugger to be incredibly useful. Our apps have millions of lines of code and sometimes I watch other developers struggle with print statements and other such techniques and never get anywhere, whereas with a debugger I'm able to find and fix the issue within minutes. They are not worse programmers than me, but they sure are inefficient and frankly, using the wrong tool for the job. For functional languages like clojure, the debugger is almost useless as they have a repl based interface and debugging is mainly playing with the repl and isolating the issue. Still, I wouldn't give up my debugger for OOP based languages for anything. I often use it during development just to check that the code is running as intended, before bugs even creep up.
