Intel has been publishing detailed documentation here: https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentation/hardware-specification-prms https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentation/hardware-specific...
For example, for Kaby Lake, you can find the ISA documented in Volume 7 (EU Overview).
- dragontamer 8y agoOh yeah, but Intel hasn't published Gen11 details yet. Emphasis on "yet". Gen11 is still unreleased. This higher-level document is a good start to anyone curious about the next-generation platform, but its still too high level for anyone who is actually working on Intel iGPU shaders or code. I'm pretty confident that Intel will eventually release more details on Gen11 as it comes out. Ideally, they will publish all the Gen11 features before the hardware is released.
- vetinari 8y agoAh, Gen11 specifically, I thought you were talking about Intel GPUs in general. Intel has a pretty good track record with releasing the docs, but I'm not so sure with the timing, and whether the docs will be available before hardware release.
- dragontamer 8y agoYeah. Now that I think of it, Intel's probably releasing this Gen11 stuff because of the GDC conference. So this document should really be seen as a "sneak peak", as opposed to a fully in depth guide. I don't think anyone can really complain about getting Gen11 details this early. I mean, I'd obviously want more documentation on a sooner timeframe, but Gen11 isn't even released yet. So we gotta keep our expectations in line with reality.
- wolfgke 8y agoIntel should release documenation/example code how you can program the GPU "bare-metal" (i.e. load a raw binary program directly on the GPU instead of providing, say, SPIR-V intermediate code to the driver).
- vetinari 8y agoRunning "bare metal" requires certain infrastructure (linkers, ABIs, etc). AMD has it in the form of HSA/ROCm; Intel does not, their drivers assume working with OpenCL/SPIR-V/GLSL.
