Pipe dreams of a generation that would happily live in free apartments with hidden cameras and microphones in every room. They even put their Alexas everwhere for just a little convenience now. Free (as in beer) trumps convenience trumps any sort of rational idealism. It's a materialistic world. Incidentally, it also provides all the tools to "opt out" at a low price. But if you want everyone to opt out (which is what the author seems to want), you'll have to pay for them too.
