I live in Germany where those machines don't really exist (and you have to exit any store going through a checkout line usually, even if most people that don't buy anything skip them) and was just baffled at how uncommon that seems to be elsewhere when I was in London. And yeah I got shouted at by a cashier over not using automated checkout.
