In my country she has received a significant amount of acclaim for her handling of this tragedy, for acknowledging and centering the fact that this attack was targeted at the Muslim community; and she rapidly made clear that our country's response to this must be to make our country safer and more welcome for our Muslim community. There still remain many unknowns about the specifics the move to ban or restrict semiautomatic weapons, and we will know more over the next fortnight.
That said, many nations that experience tragedies seem to respond with excessive veneration of their leaders, and hagiographic portrayals are always(?) unmerited.
For starters, NZ's security services -the SIS and GCSB- have spent the last two decades surveilling (sometimes illegally) Muslims, environmental groups like Greenpeace, critics of weapons manufacturers, euthanasia advocates, media piracy barons, and Māori (indigenous) critics of the government, with no discernible focus on right-wing White Supremacist groups- there has been no mention of them among ten years of annual reports.
The upcoming inquiry into this attack seems likely to be headed by party loyalists and would likely whitewash the security service focus aspect of the attack if our government does not choose a properly independent panel. I also strongly think the director of the SIS should resign but as yet there has been no indication that this will occur.
