Something about the framing of this irks me. The idea that we were all confused about how to feel before she set the tone doesn't resonate with what I experienced on the ground.
We were proud of Jacinda Ardern because she reacted how we reacted, except that she did so more eloquently.
In the moments after it happened, all of the people around me were disgusted with the act. All of us wanted to express our how devastated we were for the victims. And all of us were sad and angry that one deluded person could take a shit on the entire ethos of our country.
And then we heard Jacinda talk. And we thought, yeah. Good. She gets it.
