IANAL, but let's say you write a new open source database connection package. It gets used by some company and due to an obscure bug in the code it deletes all the data in a live production cluster and causes downtime, maybe even loses some data. I can imagine that a litigious company could potentially try to sue you for the damages that the downtime caused.
