Science became commoditized and we found out ( just like we found out with doctors ) that lots of scientific authority came from the science being behind the closed doors with People Who Know guarding the access. And just like with basic medicine people are now saying "Show me!" and "What about this?" and the scientists are either unwilling or unable to defend their positions. That's why the trust in science is eroding.
