I think it's worse when you make a reservation, but it doesn't mean anything. For example, my wife and I went to a PF Changs on a holiday. We had a reservation we scheduled at least a week ahead of time, but it meant nothing, we were put at the end of the queue. It wouldn't have made a difference if we never made the reservation at all.

Yes, but that's a problem with that particular restaurant, not with the idea of reservations. If I were bumped like that, I wouldn't go back (especially if we're talking about a chain restaurant) -- life is too short.
