Agreed. There's a difference between propaganda and documentation. Christchurch is grainy helmet cam. Not highly produced propaganda.

- ceejayoz 8y agoGrainy helmet cam can be highly produced propaganda. It seems fairly clear the guy had a social media strategy worked out, of which a live stream was an integral part.
- NeedMoreTea 8y agoJust because it is poorly produced doesn't make it documentation or rule out it being propaganda. I've no interest in seeing the video, but I understand they marked the ammunition clips with messages seen on camera. Several have been quoted in reporting. That sounds very like a deliberate attempt to make a propaganda piece of the footage. I would hope that Liveleak would rule out carrying it on the same justification. Phone cam footage from a victim or innocent bystander is far easier to consider documentation, and make a case it should be seen.

- megous 8y agoDifference is presumably in the intention, not the video quality.
- huffmsa 8y agoTrue. But it's functional no different than police bodycam footage. It is a documentation of the events as they unfolded. It does not have a message. It doesn't function as propaganda.
- jimjimjim 8y agoThe whole god damn thing was his propaganda! Why did he film it? why publish a rant? why write things on his guns? to try to push his shitville excuse of a view. To embolden other shitists. Do sow fear and anger into the non-shit.
- huffmsa 8y agoSure, it's propaganda, but you have to understand your enemy to defeat them. I'm not interested in this video or the man's opinions. But I strongly believe that the footage should be available so people can see just how horrifying it was. If you want people to take terrorism seriously, they need to really really understand how terrifying it is. Names and numbers don't do that. Watching another human go from walking and talking to stone cold dead in an instant does do that.
- jimjimjim 8y agowhat?! I was responding to your post saying it wasn't propaganda! explain yourself!
- huffmsa 8y agoI've changed my mind jimjimjim. I accept the argument that it is propaganda. But to me, it's utility as documentation of a tragedy outweighs it's utility as propaganda.
- caf 8y agoFrankly if one can't empathise with the horror of a roomful of people being massacred with a rifle purely on plain language description of the event, and instead need the full motion video, in my view such a person is perilously close to lacking any human empathy at all.

- redisman 8y ago> It does not have a message. It doesn't function as propaganda. What an absurd thing to say about a terrorists propaganda video.
- megous 8y agoPolice body cam serves to protect the citizens and police. I guess in the same way, this video will surely serve to get this guy locked up for however long is possible in NZ. But the video has a message and is part of a message that he wanted to send by the act itself. The message is his manifesto that was published along side with it. Also the guns in the video have a message. It's hard to read, but that was solved by news media that gladly published it in its entirety.
- ceejayoz 8y ago> But it's functional no different than police bodycam footage. Perfect example, but not of what you're claiming. Police bodycam footage is frequently released in partial, edited form as propaganda. When it doesn't appear to exonerate the cops, police departments often fight its release.
