- daxelrod 16y agoPart of the proposed alternate design for mounting is "A mount call that simply returned a file descriptor for the file system". A descriptor for a file system makes sense, but I was confused about what benefit a file descriptor would have. What would the normal file descriptor operations even mean in terms of a file system? Then I realized, a directory stream would be perfect for this. What better way to model a file system than a directory recursively containing other directories? This would also allow for manipulation of the file system without it needing to be bound into the root namespace (allowing this may or may not be a good idea). Then I looked at the POSIX docs, and learned that directory streams may, in fact, be implemented as file descriptors.
