The first accident involving a 737 occurred more than 4 years after introduction. This is 2 fatal crashes in the first year with only a few hundred aircraft delivered.
- oldgradstudent 8y agoAnd that was in the early 1970s, where crashes were much more common. The first crash of the 777 occurred 15 years after it was launched with 1500 aircraft delivered, and even in that crash foul play is suspected. The first crash (ignoring hijacking) of the 767 occurred almost a decade after it was launched, and the second was almost two decades after launch, and it's still not clear if it was suicide.
- duado 8y agoThe first fatal crash of the 777 was actually Asiana 214 and that was complete pilot error. I think you’re referencing MH370 a few months later.
- oldgradstudent 8y agoYes, you're right. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19398332 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19398332
- alvah 8y agoThe first 777 crash was at Heathrow in 2008, I don't recall reading anything about foul play there.
- oldgradstudent 8y agoYou're right. I was thinking about MH370, and only considered full scale crashes where everyone, or almost everyone on board dies. The major incidents were: 2008 British Airways Flight 38: 47 injured https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_38 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_38 2013 Asiana Airlines Flight 214: 3 fatalities, 187 injuries https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asiana_Airlines_Flight_214 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asiana_Airlines_Flight_214 2014 Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: disappeared https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_370 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_370 2014 Malaysia Airlines Flight 17: hit by anti aircraft missile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_370 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_370
