I thought Ubuntu Touch like Sailfish is dead. What is the state of non-iOS/Android OS in 2019?
- rrix2 8y agoUbuntu Touch is entirely a community effort at this point, I believe. Sailfish still has a company behind it, they're trying to license the OS to governments and manufacturers that don't want to rely on the US for their OSs (https://techcrunch.com/2019/03/09/the-other-smartphone-business/ https://techcrunch.com/2019/03/09/the-other-smartphone-busin...) Besides those there is Purism's PureOS for the librem5 which you can find a lit of past HN discussion on in the search
- squeezingswirls 8y agoFor Ubuntu Touch by UBports (https://ubports.com/ https://ubports.com/) the future is looking great. There's a lot of work underway to port that OS to new Android devices, plus the community is also working to port Ubuntu Touch to non-Android devices, like the future Pinephone, or Librem5.
- gardaani 8y agoSailfish OS is still alive. The company, Jolla, doesn't sell physical phones anymore. But, it is possible to purchase a ready compiled Sailfish OS (Europe only) or to compile it yourself [1]. The OS can be installed on existing hardware, such as Sony Xperia X or Gemini PDA. There are also unofficial community ports for other devices [2]. I have a 5 years old Jolla phone with Sailfish OS and I'm still getting official OS updates. :) [1] https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Sailfish_X_Build_and_Flash https://sailfishos.org/wiki/Sailfish_X_Build_and_Flash [2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailfish_OS#Community_enthusiasts%27_ports_to_devices_from_other_vendors https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailfish_OS#Community_enthusia...
