the current trend seem to be pointing towards a future where all the backends are replaced with hosted API services (AWS Lambda, Google Functions, Netlify CMS, and other emerging headless CMSs). think that is all we really need. some kind of API-first platform that lets you run any server-side code coupled with a nice abstracted database layer, and an admin interface to go along with. no one has it right yet though. but i think we'll be there soon.
