Actually, just the title of this article got me a little excited about making it happen for my emails. So I Googled how to make it happen for GMail. The options seem to be some browser plugins, or switching to another service. It is not handled by Google at all. That's a non-starter then, because I access my GMail account from the app some of the time, and there's no point in "some of the time security". Once GMail supports something like this, it'll take off a lot faster.
