Facebook’s So-Called Pivot to Privacy Is a Diversion
- sbhn 8y agoIt will still sell your attention
- crankylinuxuser 8y ago1. Open link in private session 2. Get a Faustian option to "allow" data sent to Slate whatever they want. No "Deny" button. .......... I give up.
- cphoover 8y agolol. They also have SSO through facebook, and google... which of course allows those companies to track users across different websites.
- tivert 8y ago> lol. They also have SSO through facebook, and google... which of course allows those companies to track users across different websites. The technology team that makes implementation decisions for the slate.com website is likely in an entirely different department than the journalists who write articles for it. It's kinda a cheap shot to mock the journalists for decisions they didn't even make.

- crankylinuxuser 8y agoI don't know the individuals who wrote that... Even though I read the article. What I do remember is that "Slate" journalists wrote it. And its on that platform - which is using the very privacy destroying tactics they bemoan about FB. And they also pull data from FB with people using their SSO. They made themselves as hypocrites. Nobody forced them to 'force agree' people, or to tie in to FB or goog. But they absolutely did.
- danans 8y agoIt's an editorial opinion piece, not a journalistic report. Editorial opinions often contradict the immediate financial models of the publications that carry them.
- Animats 8y agoThat was kind of obvious from Zuckerberg's statement. It's all about messaging privacy. All this is to push for Federal preemption of California's new privacy law, which takes effect January 1, 2020, and is a lot like the GPDR. Facebook is screwed if that takes effect.
- reilly3000 8y ago*when that takes effect
- mackarous 8y agoIt still baffles me that people don't realize Facebook messaging is unencrypted... How can you wonder why Facebook knows that you want to buy puppy pampers if you have been messaging your friend Karen about it all day.
- Animats 8y agoFew people care. Skype was end to end encrypted before Microsoft bought it.
