It's disappointing they don't specify which funding call this was. This would give us an insight into what really is behind this. Having been deeply involved in EU funding I am 95% certain they are overstating the "checks". Yes you have to provide financials, but it's not like the EU staff are auditing the company, they do a few basic checks based on the documents provided by the company to check that they are not in debt or going bankrupt soon. Horizon 2020 has various angles but principally is about research so they must have requested funds for that, not directly for product development. Even with closed source, still a nice thing to see this kind of company supported.
