When you say outside the bay area, do you also mean companies are not 'tech-first' type companies? (companies that hire devs, but their primary domain is not just some app/website/saas) I've applied to many jobs in Canada, but I've still noticed a large tendency for companies to put you through a screen even before they speak to you.
